The Day of Workers of the Penal System (PPS) of the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation is celebrated annually on March 12.

History of the Holiday
The holiday was established by a Decree of the President of Russia in 2010. However, the history of the service dates back to the 18th century when, under Peter I, the first specialized institutions for executing punishments were formed.

Meaning and Goals of the Holiday
The holiday highlights the importance of the work of PPS employees who ensure the execution of criminal penalties, supervise the convicted, as well as their resocialization and adaptation in society after serving their sentence.
