Rudolf Maister Day — this is a national holiday in Slovenia, celebrated annually on November 23. It is dedicated to General, poet, and national figure Rudolf Maister, who played an important role in shaping Slovenian statehood after the end of World War I.

Who was Rudolf Maister
Rudolf Maister (1874–1934) was a Slovenian general and one of the key military and political leaders who, after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, ensured the inclusion of part of Styria (in particular the city of Maribor) into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. He was also a poet and a cultural figure.

Why the holiday is celebrated on November 23
It was on November 23, 1918, that Maister took control of the city of Maribor, disarmed the German security units, and established Slovenian authority. This event is considered an important step in securing Slovenian territories for the new South Slavic state.
