History of the holiday
The Slovenian Matica was founded on August 4, 1864, in Ljubljana. It is a public organization established to promote science, culture, and national awareness among Slovenes. It became the second oldest Slovene scientific and cultural institution after the Academy of Sciences. The name "matica" symbolizes a "mother beehive", that is, the cultural and spiritual center of the people.
