The investiture ceremony of the captains regent is one of the most important and ancient state events in the Republic of San Marino. This ceremony is held twice a year: on April 1 and October 1, when new heads of state take office.Who are the captains regent?
The captains regent (Capitani Reggenti) are two equal heads of state of San Marino, elected for a six-month term. This unique political institution has been in force since the 13th century and is an example of collective leadership.
The captains regent are elected from different parties or political factions of the Great General Council (the parliament of San Marino) to ensure a balance of power and prevent the concentration of influence in one hand.
Investiture ceremony
The investiture ceremony takes place in an atmosphere of strictly observed traditions, reflecting the centuries-old history of the republic.
Main stages
Procession. Accompanied by officials, judicial representatives and military guards, the captains regent proceed to the Government Palace (Palazzo Pubblico) in the capital of San Marino.
Formal introduction. In the meeting room of the Great General Council, the current captains regent formally hand over their powers to the new ones. This is accompanied by the recitation of an oath and the signing of documents.
Speech of the newly elected regents. The new captains regent give a speech in which they outline their goals and priorities for the period of their tenure.
Religious blessing. A solemn mass is held in the Basilica of San Marino, where the new leaders receive a blessing.
Celebrations and public festivities. After the official part, concerts, folklore performances and other cultural events take place.
