Senegal was a French colony from the 19th century and was part of French West Africa. In 1959, the country formed the Mali Federation with French Sudan (now Mali), but in 1960, Senegal left the federation and proclaimed its independence. The country’s first president, Léopold Sédar Senghor, played a key role in the decolonization process.
