The Day of the African Child is observed annually on June 16. It was established in 1991 by the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) in memory of the student uprising in Soweto, South Africa, in 1976. Around 20,000 black students protested against poor education and the imposition of the Afrikaans language in schools. The protests were brutally suppressed, resulting in over 100 deaths and hundreds of injuries.

Aims and significance of the celebration
The Day of the African Child serves to:

* Honor the memory of the children who died in Soweto and recognize their courage
* Draw attention to current challenges faced by children in Africa, including access to quality education, healthcare, and protection from violence
* Promote the rights and well-being of children in accordance with the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child

Traditions and activities
Every year on June 16, various events are held:

* National and continental conferences involving governments, NGOs, international organizations, and children themselves to discuss pressing issues and develop solutions
* Educational programs and training sessions to raise awareness about children’s rights
* Cultural events, including music and theatre performances dedicated to the annual theme

Each year, a specific theme is chosen to reflect current challenges. For example, the 2024 theme was "Education for all African children: the time to act is now," highlighting the need to ensure equal access to quality education for all children across the continent.

Relevance of the celebration today
The Day of the African Child remains an important tool for:

* Raising awareness about children's rights and the need for their protection
* Mobilizing efforts from governments, organizations, and society to improve children’s living conditions
* Recognizing achievements and identifying areas requiring further attention and action
