International Day of Older Persons, celebrated on October 1st, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1990. This day aims to draw attention to the issues faced by older people and to recognize their contributions to society. It serves as a reminder of the need to care for the elderly, respect their rights, and ensure a dignified life in their later years.

Goals of the Day
Raising awareness. The day is focused on highlighting the challenges of aging and the elderly, including health, social protection, discrimination, loneliness, poverty, and other social issues that older individuals face.

Recognition of older people's contributions. Throughout their lives, older adults have made significant contributions to the economy, culture, politics, and social life of society. This day provides an opportunity to express appreciation for their work, wisdom, and knowledge.

Promoting social inclusion. One of the objectives is to combat the isolation of the elderly. Events and programs are encouraged to integrate older adults into social life and to support an active and healthy lifestyle for the elderly.

Promoting healthy aging. Health organizations, NGOs, and government institutions run campaigns to support a healthy lifestyle for seniors, including disease prevention, proper nutrition, and physical activity.

Events
In various countries, different events are held in honor of the International Day of Older Persons to support and acknowledge the elderly population:

Conferences and seminars. Discussions and seminars on the rights of older people, the challenges of aging, and the necessary support measures are organized. Topics can include healthcare, pensions, and the social and legal status of older adults.

Social events. Concerts, exhibitions, gatherings, sports competitions, and other cultural and social events are held where older people can interact, spend time together, and feel like important and valued members of society.

Volunteer programs. Many charitable organizations and volunteers run assistance initiatives for the elderly, including visits to nursing homes, help with daily tasks, and organizing celebrations for lonely seniors.

Awareness campaigns. Information campaigns are also conducted on this day to raise public awareness about the importance of supporting the elderly, improving their quality of life, and involving them in active social activities.

Population aging is a global issue. By 2050, the number of people over 60 is expected to double. This requires adjustments in economies, healthcare systems, and social structures to adequately support older individuals.
