History of the holiday
El Salvador, together with Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua, gained independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. This day became a symbol of freedom, national sovereignty, and self-determination. Since gaining independence, Independence Day has become the main national holiday, strengthening patriotism and cultural unity in the country.
