African World Heritage Day is celebrated annually on 5 May and is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the cultural and natural heritage of the African continent. This day was established under the auspices of UNESCO to draw attention to the unique heritage of Africa and the need to protect it.

The African continent is home to many sites included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, but many of them are under threat. Conflicts, destructive environmental processes and economic instability threaten the preservation of many unique places.

African World Heritage Day was proclaimed by UNESCO to highlight the importance of protecting the continent's heritage. Africa has one of the richest cultural and natural diversity in the world, which needs to be protected and recognized.

Some of Africa's famous heritage sites include the Egyptian pyramids, the cities of Timbuktu and Djenné in Mali, the Serengeti nature reserves in Tanzania and the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
