The idea of establishing World Cotton Day belongs to the countries that make up the so-called "Cotton Four" — Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, and Mali. In 2019, their proposal was supported by the World Trade Organization (WTO), and on October 7, World Cotton Day was officially celebrated for the first time.
The date was chosen intentionally — on October 7, 2003, these countries submitted to the WTO an initiative to develop international cotton trade to ensure fair conditions for producers from developing regions.

The main goal of World Cotton Day is to raise awareness of the importance of the cotton industry and emphasize the need for sustainable production. On this day, attention is given to:

* environmental and social aspects of cotton cultivation;
* support for farmers and producers, especially from developing countries;
