Veterans Day in East Timor is celebrated on March 3 and is dedicated to honouring those who fought for the country's independence. The day is a tribute to the veterans who fought in the long and difficult struggle for East Timor's independence from Indonesia, which lasted from 1975 to 1999.

History of the holiday
After declaring independence from Portugal in 1975, East Timor was soon occupied by Indonesia, sparking conflict and prolonged resistance by local fighters seeking to free the country. The struggle for independence, launched by various rebel groups, lasted for over 24 years. It was only in 1999, following a UN-backed referendum, that East Timor gained independence, and in 2002 it became a sovereign state.

Veterans Day was established as a symbol of gratitude and recognition of the courage, fortitude and dedication of all those who fought for the freedom and independence of the country.

Celebration
On this day, East Timor hosts various events and ceremonies where distinguished guests, government officials and citizens honour veterans:

Official ceremonies. Official ceremonies are held in the capital Dili and other cities, where government officials lay wreaths at monuments and observe minutes of silence in honour of the fallen.

Military parades and marches. War veterans and military forces participate in parades that symbolise the fortitude and fighting spirit of the nation.

Presentation of awards and honourary titles. Veterans who have shown particular valour in the struggle for independence are presented with state awards and honourary titles.

Memories and stories. Schools, museums and cultural centres organise exhibitions, lectures and performances by veterans, telling young people about the events and difficulties of the war for independence.
