Youth and Sports Day in Turkey is celebrated annually on May 19. This day is an important national holiday established in honor of the victory in the Battle of Saraköy (1919), which became a symbol of the beginning of the national liberation struggle of Turkey. This day is also an important day for honoring youth, sports and sports achievements in the country.

Historical Significance
May 19, 1919 was the day when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the Turkish Republic, landed in the city of Sinop on the Black Sea coast. This event is considered the beginning of the Turkish National Liberation War against the Ottoman Empire and foreign occupiers (mainly Great Britain, France and Greece). Atatürk, having arrived in Sinop, began organizing resistance and announced the beginning of the movement that led to the establishment of the modern Turkish Republic.

This day was chosen as a symbol because it not only signifies the beginning of the national struggle, but also emphasizes the importance of the role of youth in the process of building a new independent state. On this day, Ataturk gave the youth the task of “building the future of the country.”
