International Day of Awareness of the Special Development Needs and Challenges of Landlocked Developing Countries is observed annually on August 6.

History
The holiday was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2023 by resolution A/RES/77/315. Its purpose is to draw the international community's attention to the special economic and structural difficulties faced by landlocked developing countries.

Which countries are included
According to the UN, 32 countries are classified as landlocked developing countries (as of 2025). Most of them are in Africa and Asia, and they face several constraints such as:

* Dependence on neighboring countries for access to ports and trade.
* High transportation costs and logistical barriers.
* Vulnerability to climate and economic shocks.
* Limited access to global markets.

Purpose of the holiday

* Raising global awareness of the challenges these countries face.
* Encouraging international cooperation and support.
* Strengthening sustainable development and reducing poverty.
* Promoting the implementation of programs and initiatives aimed at overcoming transport, trade, and infrastructure barriers.

How it is observed

* Conferences, forums, and seminars on sustainable development are organized.
* Representatives of the UN, NGOs, and governments discuss strategic initiatives and funding.
* Thematic reports and analyses are published.
* Partnerships between developing and developed countries are promoted.

Significance
This day emphasizes the importance of inclusive economic growth and equal access to development opportunities. It reminds the international community of the need for solidarity with the world's most vulnerable countries and the commitments made under the Vienna Programme of Action and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
