Day of adoption
September 17, Wednesday

Date of celebration
It is celebrated annually on September 17, starting from 2023.
Previously, from 2009 to 2022, this day was observed on September 30. However, due to a reform of the church calendar, in 2023 the date was moved to September 17, coinciding with the commemoration of the holy martyrs Vera, Nadezhda, Lyubov, and their mother Sophia, emphasizing the Christian values and virtues associated with adoption.
History of the holiday
The initiator of the holiday was the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko. On November 27, 2008, he signed decree No. 1088/2008 "On Adoption Day," which prescribed observing this day each year on September 30.
Significance of the holiday
Adoption Day serves as a reminder of the importance of family upbringing and supporting children left without parents. It helps raise public awareness of orphanhood issues and the role of foster families in children’s lives.
