Circumcision of Jesus

Biblical basis
The event of the circumcision of Jesus is described in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2:21): on the eighth day after birth, in accordance with Jewish tradition, the infant Jesus was circumcised and given his name. This ritual was an important part of Jewish religious practice and symbolized belonging to the people of God. Circumcision was considered a sign of the covenant between God and Abraham, concluded in the Old Testament.
Celebration in the Christian tradition
Eastern and Western churches celebrate the Circumcision of the Lord slightly differently, although the meaning and importance of the holiday remain similar.
In the Orthodox Church. This holiday often coincides with the day of remembrance of St. Basil the Great (January 1 according to the Julian calendar). The liturgy on this day includes prayers glorifying the Lord for His humility and obedience to the Law. The Circumcision of the Lord symbolizes not only the fulfillment of the Law of Moses, but also the beginning of Jesus' path leading to the redemption of mankind.
In the Catholic Church. Previously, the Circumcision of the Lord was also celebrated on January 1, but since 1970, the Catholic Church began to celebrate the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on this day. However, the meaning of circumcision and the naming of Jesus is preserved in theology and liturgy.
In Protestant traditions. Some Protestant denominations also celebrate the day, although the holiday may have less significance than Christmas and Easter.
