History and origin
The Day of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred was established by the decree of the President of Ukraine in 2015 in memory of the events that took place on Maidan Nezalezhnosti in Kyiv in 2013-2014. During the protests that began in November 2013, Ukrainian citizens demanded transparency, respect for human rights and integration with the European Union.
The situation on Maidan escalated in February 2014, when security forces began violently dispersing protesters. As a result of the clashes known as "Bloody Week" (from February 18 to 20), more than a hundred people were killed. These people became known as the "Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred" and symbolize the Ukrainian people's aspirations for freedom and justice.
How is the Day of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred celebrated
Memorial events. Various events are held throughout Ukraine, such as rallies, funeral services, and flower-laying ceremonies at monuments and memorials dedicated to the heroes.
Ceremonial gatherings. Ceremonial gatherings are held in Kyiv and other cities, where government officials, veterans, and activists speak, recalling the events of the Maidan and the heroes of the Heavenly Hundred.
Recollections and discussions. Lectures and discussions are held in educational institutions, cultural centers, and public forums, dedicated to the significance of the Revolution of Dignity and its consequences for Ukraine.
Film screenings and exhibitions. Documentary film screenings and exhibitions are organized, which tell about the events on the Maidan and the heroes who gave their lives for freedom and human rights.
The Day of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred has become an important element of Ukrainian national identity, symbolizing the people's aspiration for freedom and European values. The memory of the heroes serves as a source of inspiration for future generations, encouraging them to actively participate in the life of the country and protect their rights. This day reminds us of the need to fight for truth, justice and democracy, as well as the importance of civic participation in the life of society.
