Saint Demetrius Day (Dmitry’s Day) is an Orthodox holiday dedicated to the memory of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, a great martyr. It is celebrated on October 26 in the new style (October 13 in the old style). This day traditionally held great significance in folk culture and is associated with autumn agricultural work and rituals.

History of the holiday
Demetrius of Thessaloniki was a Christian martyr of the 4th century, revered as the protector of warriors and farmers. His memory is observed in the Orthodox Church as a day of mercy, protection, and spiritual support.

Folk traditions
On Dmitry’s Day in Russia, special folk rituals were observed:

* Conducting autumn harvest work and completing the agricultural season.
* Organizing fairs where livestock and grain were traded, and barter deals were finalized.
* Paying special attention to signs: it was believed that the weather on this day predicted the coming winter.
* Young people and unmarried girls sometimes performed divination rituals to foresee future spouses.

Modern traditions
Today, Dmitry’s Day is mainly observed in church tradition: people attend services, pray to Saint Demetrius for health, protection, and assistance in their affairs. In some regions, fair elements and folk signs are still preserved.

Symbolism
Symbols of the holiday include the cross, the image of Saint Demetrius, and traditional autumn attributes such as grain, fruits, and livestock.
