Stephen Lawrence Day is celebrated annually in the UK on 22 April. The day is dedicated to the memory of Stephen Lawrence, a young man killed in a racist attack in London in 1993, and is a symbol of the fight against racism, inequality and injustice.

Stephen Lawrence (1974–1993) was a talented teenager who dreamed of becoming an architect. On 22 April 1993, aged 18, Stephen was murdered in south-east London by a group of white youths who attacked him out of racist prejudice. The investigation into the murder was marred by police incompetence and racial prejudice, which led to the suspects escaping punishment for a long time.

How is it celebrated?
Educational events. Schools hold lessons about Stephen’s life, the history of racism in the UK and the importance of the fight for equality.

Charity projects. The Stephen Lawrence Foundation runs programs to support young people, especially in the areas of education, careers, and leadership development.

Social initiatives. People share stories on social media and support campaigns against discrimination and inequality.
