Sussex Day
June 16, Monday

History of the celebration
The idea for establishing Sussex Day came from Worthing resident Ian Steedman, who proposed it to local politician Henry Smith in 2006. In 2007, the holiday was officially recognized by West Sussex County Council.
Traditions and celebrations
Celebration of Sussex Day includes:
* Raising the Sussex flag featuring six gold martlets on a blue background in various towns and villages across the county, including Chichester, Arundel, Bramber, Lewes, Pevensey, and Hastings
* Reading the Sussex Charter, which emphasizes residents' responsibility for preserving nature, supporting local businesses, and protecting cultural heritage
* Singing the unofficial county anthem "Sussex by the Sea" during the festivities
* Hosting cultural events, fairs, exhibitions, tastings of local products like beer and wine, as well as sports competitions and musical performances
