Historical Background
Saint Andrew is believed to have been crucified on an X-shaped cross, now known as a saltire or Saint Andrew’s Cross, which later became the symbol on the Scottish national flag. His association with Scotland dates back to at least the 9th century, when his relics were said to have been brought to the town of St Andrews, which became a center of religious pilgrimage.
