History of the Bloody Mary Cocktail
The origin of the Bloody Mary cocktail remains controversial, and there are several versions of its creation. Here are two of the most famous:
Fernand Petiot's version. According to one of the most common stories, the cocktail was first prepared in the 1920s in Paris by bartender Fernand Petiot. He mixed tomato juice with vodka for visitors to Harry's New York Bar. At first, the cocktail was quite simple, but gradually ingredients such as Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, black pepper, celery and Tabasco were added to the recipe.
George Jessel's version. Another version states that actor and producer George Jessel was also involved in the creation of the cocktail in the 1930s. He claimed to have once mixed vodka with tomato juice, which became the prototype of the modern cocktail.
The name "Bloody Mary" also has several versions. One of them is associated with the Queen of England Mary I Tudor, known for her cruel persecution of Protestants. Another version suggests that the cocktail was named after a waitress named Mary who worked in one of the bars in Chicago.
National Bloody Mary Day Traditions
Making the cocktail at home. Many people celebrate this day by mixing Bloody Mary at home, using both the classic and more modern variations of the recipe.
Bloody Mary Brunch. In the United States, this cocktail is popular at brunches, where it is often served with dishes such as eggs Benedict or omelets.
Contests and events. Some restaurants and bars hold Bloody Mary recipe contests on this day, where participants compete in preparing the most unusual and delicious versions of the cocktail.
