National Irish Coffee Day is celebrated annually on January 25 in the United States. This day is dedicated to the famous cocktail, which combines strong coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar and cream. Irish coffee has become popular all over the world due to its unique taste and warming effect, especially during the cold season. Irish coffee was first created in the early 1940s at Foynes Airport (today's Shannon Airport) in Ireland. Its creator is considered to be chef Joe Sheridan. Legend has it that one cold night, passengers on a transatlantic flight were forced to return to the airport due to adverse weather conditions. To warm up the frozen passengers, Joe Sheridan offered them coffee with the addition of Irish whiskey, which later became known as Irish coffee.
