National Girls and Women in Sports Day is observed in the United States during the first week of February; it usually falls on the first Wednesday of the month. The day serves as a reminder of the importance of physical activity and sports participation for women and girls, as well as the need for equal access to sports opportunities.

History
National Girls and Women in Sports Day was established in 1987 to commemorate the first anniversary of the passage of the Civil Rights in Sports Act (Title IX). This law, passed in 1972, prohibited discrimination on the basis of sex in educational institutions, opening the door to more equal opportunities in sports.

Celebration
National Girls and Women in Sports Day is observed in a variety of ways:

Sports events. Sports clubs and organizations host special events such as tournaments, workshops, and exhibitions that highlight women's participation in sports.

Educational programs. Schools and universities organise events to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles for girls, and discuss the importance of equality in sport.

Social Media: The day makes extensive use of social media to raise awareness of the challenges women face in sport and to recognise the achievements of female athletes.
