Armed Forces Day is observed annually on the third Saturday in May. The day was established to recognize and thank the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces, including the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

History of the holiday
Armed Forces Day was officially established by President Harry Truman in 1949. At that time, the U.S. Department of Defense was consolidating the various branches of the armed forces under a single authority, and instead of having separate holidays for each branch of the armed forces (such as Navy Day or Army Day), a single Armed Forces Day was created.

The first official celebration took place on May 20, 1950 under the slogan "Teamed for Defense".
