Coast Guard Day is a United States holiday celebrated annually on August 4th. It honors the founding of the U.S. Coast Guard and recognizes the service and dedication of its members. The holiday commemorates the establishment of the Revenue Cutter Service in 1790, which later merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service to become the modern Coast Guard in 1915.

History
On August 4, 1790, the U.S. Congress authorized the construction of ten vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws and to prevent smuggling. These vessels formed the Revenue Cutter Service, which is considered the origin of the U.S. Coast Guard. The service was created under the Department of the Treasury at the request of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury.

In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service, forming the United States Coast Guard. Since then, the Coast Guard has grown into a vital branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, responsible for maritime safety, security, and environmental stewardship.
