National Public Lands Day (National Public Lands Day, NPLD) is the largest one-day volunteer event in the United States dedicated to the conservation and improvement of public lands. It is held annually on the fourth Saturday of September, when the weather is still favorable for outdoor work.

History of the holiday
The first National Public Lands Day was held on July 30, 1994, under the name "Public Lands Recognition Day." It was organized by Times Mirror magazine and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), attracting about 700 volunteers at two sites. Since then, the event has expanded significantly: the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) took over coordination, and the number of participants increased to more than 50,000 nationwide.

Purpose and significance
NPLD focuses on restoring and improving public lands, including national parks, forests, monuments, reserves, coastal areas, and urban parks. The event strengthens citizens’ connection with nature, raises awareness of environmental conservation, and engages local communities in preserving natural heritage.

Traditions of celebration
Key activities include:

* Participating in volunteer efforts such as land cleanups, tree planting, ecosystem restoration, and infrastructure repair.
* Free admission to national parks and other federal lands on the day of the event.
* Conducting educational and cultural activities to raise awareness about the importance of public lands.
* Collaborating with local organizations, schools, and government agencies to organize joint events.

Modern features
Today, NPLD remains the largest volunteer event in the U.S., attracting thousands of participants annually. In 2024, more than 700 events were held across 50 states and territories, including Puerto Rico and American Samoa, with over 52,000 participants.

National Public Lands Day is not only an opportunity to contribute to environmental conservation but also a chance to be part of a community caring for the planet’s future.
