Navy Day
October 27, Monday

History of the holiday
United States Navy Day was established in 1922 by Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby. The date, October 27, was chosen deliberately — it is the birthday of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, who was a strong advocate for the development of the country's naval power. Roosevelt is known for his reformist policies regarding the navy: under his leadership, the United States significantly strengthened its naval forces, allowing the country to become one of the leading maritime powers in the world.
Until 1949, Navy Day was widely celebrated at the national level, but after the establishment of the unified Armed Forces Day, the significance of this day somewhat declined. Nevertheless, it continues to be observed at some naval bases, naval academies, and veteran organizations.
How the holiday is celebrated
Traditionally, various ceremonial events are held on this day:
* Ceremonies at naval bases and aboard ships
* Laying wreaths at monuments and memorials for sailors
* Parades and demonstrations of naval equipment
* Concerts by military bands
* Meetings of veterans and active-duty naval personnel
In some cities across the United States, themed exhibitions and educational programs dedicated to the history of the American navy are organized.
Significance of the holiday
United States Navy Day serves as a reminder of the importance of the country's maritime power and of those who serve at sea, protecting U.S. interests worldwide. It expresses gratitude to sailors for their dedication, discipline, and readiness to serve even under the most challenging conditions.
Although Armed Forces Day has officially become the main military holiday of the country, October 27 remains a special date for veterans, active-duty members of the navy, and everyone who takes pride in the maritime history and traditions of the United States.
