History of the Anthem and the Holiday
The National Anthem was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 during the War of 1812. The poem was inspired by the Battle of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, when Key, watching the battle, saw the American flag proudly waving after the British attack. This moment inspired him to write the lyrics that later formed the basis for the anthem. In 1931, almost a century after it was written, "The Star-Spangled Banner" officially became the national anthem of the United States.
March 3 was chosen as the date for the holiday because it was on this day in 1931 that Congress adopted the song as the national anthem.
