International Widows Day is observed annually on June 23. The day was established by the UN in 2011 to draw attention to the problems faced by widows around the world. Although widowhood is a part of the lives of many women, they are often ignored in public discourse and face a range of social, economic and cultural challenges, especially in developing countries.

Objectives of International Widows Day
Raising awareness of widows' issues. The day aims to highlight complex issues such as poverty, discrimination, lack of rights and social guarantees that widows face.
Protecting widows' rights. The UN and other international organizations seek to promote laws and policies that will protect widows from violations of their rights, provide access to justice and ensure fair treatment.
Economic support and social inclusion. The holiday also aims to raise awareness of the need for economic support for widows and create opportunities for them to live a dignified life.

Events and initiatives
Awareness campaigns. On this day, international organizations and social movements campaign for widows’ rights, drawing attention to their problems through social media, webinars, and public events.
Legal support. Widows have access to free legal aid to defend their property rights, protect themselves from discrimination and violence.
Training and employment programs. Many organizations create programs aimed at improving widows’ skills and providing them with the opportunity to earn an income to support themselves and their children.

International Widows’ Day is an important opportunity to draw attention to the unfair and cruel traditions that widows face and to work for change, ensuring equal rights, economic opportunities, and a dignified life for them.
