Red Hat Society Day
April 25, Friday

History of the holiday
In 1997, Californian artist Sue Ellen Cooper gave her friend a red hat for her birthday, inspired by the lines from Jenny Joseph's poem "Warning": "When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me." This gesture inspired a group of women to organize a tea party on April 25, 1998, which became the first gathering of the Red Hat Society.
Purpose of the holiday
Red Hat Society Day is dedicated to celebrating female friendship, fun, and freedom of self-expression. Participants, especially women over 50, gather together wearing red hats and purple outfits to highlight the joy and confidence that come with age.
How it is celebrated
- Gatherings and tea parties: Members of the society organize meetups where they share stories, participate in activities, and enjoy each other’s company.
- Wearing red hats and purple outfits: This symbolizes embracing age with joy and style.
- Social events: Various events such as theater outings, games, and trips are organized to help strengthen friendship bonds.
Interesting facts
- International community: The Red Hat Society has over 35,000 members worldwide.
- Open to all ages: Although the society was originally intended for women over 50, it is now open to all ages. Younger members wear pink hats and lavender outfits until they turn 50.
Red Hat Society Day reminds us of the importance of female friendship and the joy of living at any age.
