Great Lakes Awareness Day is an annual holiday celebrated on the Monday of the first full week of May. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the environmental, cultural, and economic aspects of the Great Lakes of North America.

Importance of the Great Lakes
The Great Lakes are the five largest freshwater lakes on Earth: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. They hold about 21% of the planet's surface freshwater and provide drinking water to over 40 million people in the United States and Canada. Additionally, these lakes play a key role in shipping, fishing, agriculture, and tourism.

History of the holiday
The holiday was established in 2018 as a response to environmental threats, including the construction of the Line 5 pipeline through Lakes Michigan and Huron. Since then, the day has become a symbol of the fight to preserve freshwater ecosystems and draw attention to issues of pollution, climate change, and invasive species.

How Great Lakes Awareness Day is celebrated
On this day, various events are held to promote awareness and protection of the Great Lakes:

- organizing shoreline cleanups
- boat tours and walks along the coast
- attending ecology lectures and seminars
- creating artworks inspired by the lakes’ nature
- birdwatching and observing other wildlife

These activities help people build a deeper connection with nature and recognize the importance of preserving the unique ecosystems of the Great Lakes.
