Bitcoin Pizza Day
May 22, Thursday

History of the holiday
On May 22, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz from Florida posted a message on the bitcointalk forum offering 10,000 BTC in exchange for two pizzas. Later, he reported that the deal went through — another user ordered him pizzas from Papa John’s, and Laszlo transferred the promised bitcoins.
Significance of the event
At the time, 10,000 BTC were worth around 41 US dollars. But as the value of bitcoin grew, that amount eventually became equivalent to tens and later hundreds of millions of dollars. Today, the deal is often cited as an example of how much cryptocurrency has increased in value.
How Bitcoin Pizza Day is celebrated
Many cryptocurrency and blockchain enthusiasts celebrate May 22 by ordering pizza and posting on social media. Some events include:
* ordering pizza with cryptocurrency;
* themed gatherings and meetups;
* educational lectures about bitcoin;
* giveaways and promotions from crypto exchanges.
Interesting fact
Laszlo Hanyecz later said he didn’t regret the purchase, as he wanted to demonstrate the real-world use of bitcoin. He became something of a symbol of cryptocurrency progress and early user enthusiasm.
