National Sea Monkey Day
May 16, Friday

History of the holiday
In 1957, inventor Harold von Braunhut introduced sea monkeys under the name "Instant Life". In 1962, they were renamed "Sea Monkeys" because of their tails that resembled those of monkeys. These creatures became a true pop culture phenomenon, appearing in comics and TV shows such as The Simpsons and South Park. In 1998, sea monkeys even traveled to space aboard the shuttle Discovery.
