National Sea Monkey Day is celebrated annually on May 16. This holiday is dedicated to unusual pets — sea monkeys, which are a special type of brine shrimp (Artemia NYOS). These tiny creatures became popular in the 1960s thanks to their unique ability to "come to life" when water is added, making them ideal first pets for children.

History of the holiday
In 1957, inventor Harold von Braunhut introduced sea monkeys under the name "Instant Life". In 1962, they were renamed "Sea Monkeys" because of their tails that resembled those of monkeys. These creatures became a true pop culture phenomenon, appearing in comics and TV shows such as The Simpsons and South Park. In 1998, sea monkeys even traveled to space aboard the shuttle Discovery.
