World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually on June 14 and is dedicated to the importance of blood donation and to recognizing the people who voluntarily give their blood to save lives. The day was established by the World Health Organization in 2004 and was chosen to honor the birthday of Austrian physician Karl Landsteiner, who won the Nobel Prize in 1930 for his discovery of blood groups.
