Venezuela annually celebrates on August 3 two important patriotic holidays: National Flag Day (Día de la Bandera Nacional) and National Guard Day (Día de la Guardia Nacional). These dates are dedicated to the symbols of statehood and the structures that ensure the country's internal security.

National Flag Day
The holiday was established to honor one of Venezuela's main symbols — the flag, which embodies independence, freedom, and sovereignty. Originally, Flag Day was celebrated on March 12 — in memory of the first raising of the flag by Francisco de Miranda in 1806. However, in 2006, by decree of President Hugo Chávez, the holiday was moved to August 3 — the day Miranda first raised the Venezuelan flag on land, in La Vela de Coro.

Meaning of the flag
The national flag of Venezuela consists of three horizontal stripes: yellow, blue, and red. In the center of the blue stripe are eight white stars, symbolizing the historical provinces. Yellow represents wealth and the sun, blue symbolizes freedom, and red represents the blood shed in the struggle for independence.

Holiday traditions
On this day, the following events are held in the country:
– ceremonial flag raisings;
– patriotic speeches and rallies;
– history lessons and educational events in schools;
– official speeches by government representatives.

National Guard Day
The National Guard of Venezuela (Guardia Nacional Bolivariana) is one of the four main branches of the National Armed Forces. Its main task is to protect public order, strategic facilities, and borders.

National Guard Day was established in honor of its official foundation in 1937. Today, it plays an important role in internal security and is involved in civil protection, the fight against smuggling, drug trafficking, and other crimes.

Holiday traditions
On National Guard Day, the following take place:
– military parades and official formations;
– awarding of distinguished servicemen;
– demonstration exercises and displays;
– honoring of service veterans.

Meaning of both holidays
Both dates emphasize national pride, strengthen identity, and serve as a reminder of the importance of serving the homeland — both on the battlefield and in the peaceful defense of civil order. August 3 in Venezuela is a day of unity for citizens under the symbols of the state.
