The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March. This day was established by the UN in 1966 in memory of the tragic events that took place in Sharpeville (South Africa) on 21 March 1960, when police opened fire on peaceful demonstrators protesting against the racist apartheid laws.
