Self-Injury Awareness Day is celebrated annually on March 1st and aims to raise awareness about self-harm and self-injury. This day reminds us of the importance of supporting people who are experiencing internal psychological difficulties and the need to provide them with adequate help. Self-harm (or self-injury) is a behavior in which a person harms themselves, often as a way of coping with emotional or psychological problems.

Symbols and events
Orange ribbon. The symbol of the day is an orange ribbon. It is used to draw attention to the topic and create a visual reminder of support for people struggling with self-injury.

Awareness campaigns. On this day, medical institutions, schools and public organizations distribute educational materials, hold seminars and webinars to explain the causes of self-harm and offer prevention methods.

Support groups and open conversations. Meetings are held where people can freely share their stories and receive moral support. These activities help relieve the sense of isolation that often affects those who experience self-harm.

Social media and hashtags. On social media, people share their stories, using hashtags such as #SIAD (Self-Injury Awareness Day), #YouAreNotAlone (“You are not alone”) to unite those who need support and inspiration on the path to overcoming difficulties.

Support Tips
If you have a loved one who is experiencing self-harm, it is important to:

Maintain contact. Talk to them with understanding, without judgment. Let them know that you are there for them.

Avoid pressure. Pressure and harsh comments can make the situation worse. It is better to offer help, gently and patiently.

Help with resources. Offer to help find a psychologist or a support group.
