Dien Bien Phu Victory Day is an important date in Vietnamese history, celebrated on May 7. The day commemorates the victory at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu, which was a decisive event in the First Indochina War (1946–1954) between French colonial forces and Vietnamese troops led by Vo Nguyen Giap, a Viet Minh general.

History
The Battle of Dien Bien Phu took place in northwestern Vietnam, in the Dien Bien River Valley, in 1954. It was one of the largest battles of the First Indochina War between the forces of the French Union and the army of the Viet Minh, an armed movement that fought for Vietnam's independence from French colonial rule.

The French army hoped to win this strategically important battle, but faced determined resistance. The Vietnamese army, led by General Voi Ngoc Thien, was able to surround the French troops and force them to capitulate. This ended French colonial rule in Indochina and marked the beginning of Vietnam's independence process.
