International Day of Light is celebrated annually on May 16. It was established by UNESCO to emphasize the role of light and light technologies in science, culture, education, sustainable development, and solving global challenges of humanity.

History of the holiday
The date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser by American physicist Theodore Maiman on May 16, 1960.
The holiday was officially proclaimed in November 2017 at the UNESCO General Conference.
