Historical Significance of the Holiday
The holiday dates back to 1956, when more than 20,000 women of different races gathered in Pretoria to protest against discriminatory compulsory registration laws for black residents of the country. These laws, known as "pastoral laws", required non-whites to carry identification documents at all times, restricting their movement.
How it is celebrated
Official events. Rallies, ceremonial meetings and speeches by political leaders are held on this day.
Festivals and cultural events. Concerts, exhibitions and theatrical performances are organized dedicated to the history of the women's movement.
