Zimbabwe Independence Day is celebrated annually on 18 April. It is the country's main national holiday, marking the country's declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1980 and the end of years of struggle against colonialism and racial discrimination.

Celebration
Independence Day is celebrated with great fanfare, including:

Ceremonies. Official events take place in the capital, Harare. The President delivers a speech on the historical significance of the date and the current state of the country.

Military parades. The army displays its achievements while paying tribute to veterans of the war for independence.

Cultural events. Street festivals, traditional dances, songs and theatre performances tell the story of the struggle for freedom.

Sporting events. Football, rugby and other sports tournaments and competitions are organised across the country.

Wreath laying. Veterans and those who died in the struggle for independence are honoured.
