Holocaust Day
March 10, Monday
The Day of the Holocaust and the Rescue of Jews in Bulgaria is celebrated annually on March 10 and has a special significance for the country. The day is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust and celebrates the rescue of about 48,000 Bulgarian Jews from deportation to Nazi death camps in 1943, a unique story of courage and solidarity.Historical Background and Significance
On March 10, 1943, Bulgaria, which was an ally of Nazi Germany at the time, received orders to begin the deportation of the Jewish population. However, thanks to the efforts of Bulgarian citizens, church representatives, intellectuals and politicians, the plan to deport the Jews was thwarted. Among the prominent figures who spoke out against the deportation were the Deputy Chairman of the National Assembly Dimitar Peshev, Metropolitans Stefan and Kiril, and many others. Their actions helped prevent a tragedy and save the lives of thousands of people.
However, despite the rescue of Jews in Bulgaria itself, more than 11,000 Jews from the Bulgarian-occupied territories (in today's North Macedonia and northern Greece) were deported and died in Nazi camps. This remains a tragic part of history and is also honored on this day.
