History of the holiday
Melchior Ndadaye was elected president of Burundi in June 1993, becoming the country’s first leader from the Hutu ethnic group. His election victory marked an important milestone in Burundi’s history, as power had traditionally been held by members of the Tutsi ethnic group.
However, on October 21 of the same year, just a few months after taking office, President Ndadaye was assassinated in a military coup. His death triggered widespread ethnic clashes and a prolonged civil conflict that claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
