History of the holiday
Flag Day was established in 1981. The date was chosen intentionally — on September 6, 1499, navigator Alonso de Ojeda arrived on the island, marking the beginning of its recognition in Europe. The holiday was created as an opportunity to emphasize Bonaire’s identity and pride in its flag.

* blue represents the sea surrounding the island;
* yellow symbolizes sunlight and natural wealth;
* white stands for peace and freedom;
* the black six-pointed star in a circle represents the six villages of the island;
* the red circle signifies determination and strength.
