Veterans Day is a commemorative date observed in the Czech Republic annually on November 11. This day is dedicated to honoring all military veterans who have participated in wars and international peacekeeping missions, defending peace and security.

Historical origin
The date November 11 was chosen deliberately — on this day in 1918, the Armistice of Compiègne was signed, ending the First World War. In many countries, this day is known as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day. The Czech Republic joined the international tradition in 2001, officially establishing Veterans Day as a national commemorative day.

Who is honored
On this day in the Czech Republic, tribute is paid to:

* participants in both world wars;
* veterans of the resistance and anti-fascist movement;
* military personnel participating in modern peacekeeping and humanitarian missions under NATO, UN, and EU auspices;
* all those who served in the name of peace and defense of the homeland.

Symbol of the holiday
The main symbol of Veterans Day is the red poppy. It recalls the fields of Flanders, where bloody battles took place during the First World War, and where the first poppies grew on soldiers’ graves. People in the Czech Republic wear paper poppies to express gratitude to veterans for their service.

How it is celebrated

* Official ceremonies take place at memorials and military monuments, particularly at the National Monument on Vítkov in Prague.
* Representatives of the army, veterans, state officials, and citizens lay wreaths and light candles.
* Themed lessons are held in schools, teaching children about the significance of service and military deeds.
* Public organizations conduct campaigns to support veterans and their families.

Modern significance
Veterans Day in the Czech Republic is not only a day of remembrance but also a demonstration of respect for those who have dedicated their lives to defending peace. It reminds society of the need to maintain peace, value freedom, and support those who served for the country's future.

This day is not a public holiday, but it is observed at the state level and holds high moral and patriotic significance.
