Holy Innocents’ Day — a Christian day of remembrance dedicated to the children killed by order of King Herod in Bethlehem after the birth of Jesus Christ. This day is observed in various Christian traditions as a reminder of the first martyrs for Christ.

Biblical origin
The event is described in the Gospel of Matthew. Upon learning from the Magi about the birth of the "King of the Jews," Herod, fearing the loss of his power, ordered the killing of all male infants in Bethlehem and its surroundings under the age of two. Jesus was saved thanks to the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt.

Date of observance
The day of remembrance is observed:

* in the Catholic Church and most Protestant churches on December 28
* in the Orthodox tradition according to the Gregorian calendar on December 29, which corresponds to January 11 on the Julian calendar

Spiritual significance
This day symbolizes:

* the innocence and purity of children’s souls
* sacrifice for the sake of Christ
* the tragedy of human cruelty
* hope for salvation and eternal life

The infants are honored as the first martyrs who suffered for Christ, although they were not yet able to consciously profess faith.

Traditions and worship
On this day in churches:

* special services and readings are held
* prayers are offered for children and families
* all innocently killed children are remembered

In many countries, the day has a subdued, mournful character, despite falling within the Christmas period.

Folk customs
In different cultures, various traditions have developed:

* in Spain and Latin American countries, the day is known as Día de los Santos Inocentes and is accompanied by jokes and pranks
* in some European regions, there was previously a custom of symbolically "crowning" children
* in some places, the day was an occasion for charity and helping children

In the Christian calendar
Holy Innocents’ Day is part of the Christmas holidays and is observed alongside:

* Saint Stephen, the first martyr
* Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist

Together, they highlight different forms of witness to Christ: by deed, word, and the sacrifice of life.

Meaning of the day today
Today, this day reminds us of the value of every child’s life, calls for the protection of children, compassion, and adult responsibility for the world in which new generations grow. It also encourages reflection on how faith and mercy can counteract cruelty and fear.
