Åland Islands Autonomy Day (Ahvenanmaan itsehallintopäivä) is celebrated annually on June 9. It is an official holiday in the Åland Islands, an autonomous region of Finland with a predominantly Swedish-speaking population.

Historical significance
On June 9, 1922, the Åland Islands parliament (Lagting) convened for the first time, marking the beginning of the region’s actual autonomy. This status was established by the Åland Autonomy Act, adopted in 1920 after a decision by the League of Nations:

* The Åland Islands remained part of Finland but received special rights
* Swedish became the official language
* The region gained broad legislative and administrative independence

Celebration features
In the Åland Islands, June 9 is considered an official flag day. On this day:

* The Åland flag is raised
* Ceremonial events are held, including speeches by politicians and cultural figures
* Concerts, parades, and public festivities are organized
* Many institutions are decorated with national symbols

Cultural and political importance
Åland Islands Autonomy Day symbolizes the successful peaceful resolution of a territorial conflict and a unique form of self-government within a sovereign state. The Åland autonomy model is considered an example for other regions around the world.
