Memorial Day Abbon of Fleury
November 13, Thursday
Who was Abbo of Fleury
Abbo of Fleury (around 945–1004) was a Benedictine monk and later the abbot of the Fleury Abbey (modern Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire in France). He was known for his deep knowledge in theology, philosophy, mathematics, and astronomy. Abbo was one of the most educated people of his time and played a key role in reviving scholarship in early medieval Europe.
Activity and contribution
During his leadership of the monastery, Abbo sought to restore the strict monastic rules of Saint Benedict and strengthen discipline among the monks. He was also engaged in:
* teaching and writing theological works;
* reforming monastic life in France and England;
* participating in church councils and debates on matters of faith.
Abbo left behind several writings, including the well-known treatise “Collectio canonum,” dedicated to issues of church governance and morality.
Martyrdom
Saint Abbo was killed in 1004 while trying to reconcile conflicting sides in one of the monasteries. He died as a peacemaker, and soon after his death, he began to be venerated as a martyr.

The Feast of Saint Abbo of Fleury is celebrated on November 13. On this day, monks and believers remember him as a symbol of wisdom, justice, and spiritual enlightenment.
