Jerusalem Day is a national holiday in Israel, the date of which varies depending on the Hebrew calendar, as it falls on the 28th day of the month of Iyar. Jerusalem Day commemorates the reunification of the city and its liberation during the Six-Day War in 1967, when Israel took control of East Jerusalem, including the Old City.

History of the holiday
Jerusalem Day was established to celebrate the liberation and reunification of Jerusalem, which was divided after 1948, when Israel became an independent state. After 1948, Jerusalem was divided into two parts: the western part was under Israeli control, and the eastern part, including the Old City, was under Jordanian control.

During the Six-Day War in 1967, Israel captured East Jerusalem, reuniting it with West Jerusalem, which became the capital of the State of Israel. This event was a turning point in the history of the city and the state, which became the basis for the celebration of Jerusalem Day.

How the holiday is celebrated
Ceremonies and celebrations. On Jerusalem Day, official ceremonies and celebrations are held, including laying flowers at monuments and memorial sites associated with the history of the city and its liberation. An important event is the ceremony at the Western Wall (Wailing Wall), which is a holy place for Jews.

One of the most famous is the Flag March, during which Jews walk through the old streets of the city, including the Arab quarters of the Old City, with Israeli flags, celebrating the reunification of Jerusalem.

Festive events and concerts. In the evening on Jerusalem Day, concerts, music festivals, performances, and mass festivities are held, which attract residents and visitors of the city.

Day of Remembrance and Gratitude. Jerusalem Day also remembers the soldiers who died during the Six-Day War, especially those who participated in the liberation of the city. Memorial events may be held in their memory.
