National Foundation Day of South Korea (개천절, Gaecheonjeol) is one of the country’s main national holidays. It is celebrated every year on October 3 and is dedicated to the mythical event of the founding of the first Korean state, Gojoseon, in 2333 BC.

Historical and mythological origin
According to Korean mythology, the state was founded by the legendary ruler Dangun Wanggeom, the son of the heavenly being Hwanung. The legend says that Dangun descended from the heavens and laid the foundations of the first Korean state, symbolizing the beginning of the history and identity of the Korean people.

The name of the holiday «개천절» is translated as "Day of the Opening of Heaven" and reflects the connection of the mythological foundation of the country with divine forces.

When it is celebrated
The holiday falls on October 3 each year. The date was chosen in memory of the day when Dangun, according to legend, founded the state of Gojoseon.

How it is celebrated
The traditions of celebration combine both official state events and cultural programs:

* solemn ceremonies are held at monuments to Dangun and in national shrines,
* festivals, concerts, and parades are organized,
* educational and cultural events are held, telling about the ancient history of Korea,
* people display national flags on houses and buildings.

Meaning of the holiday
National Foundation Day symbolizes the beginning of Korean civilization and national identity. It reminds the citizens of the country of their ancient roots, the unity of the people, and the cultural heritage that connects the past with the present.
